Take a moment to listen to the silence on Sprengisandur highland route before reaching Aldeyjarfoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. See the Askja Caldera, accessible from the north and the 25 km row of Laki craters, accessible from the south. In addition to the highland attractions you will visit the famous Golden Circle, Lake Myvatn and Skaftafell National Park.

Day 1: Arrive Iceland

Upon arrival at Keflavík International Airport, you pick up your pre-booked rental car. If you arrive in the morning or afternoon, you might want to stop by at the Blue Lagoon on your way into the city of Reykjavik.

Day 2: Golden Circle

Leave the city in the morning for the UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park Thingvellir. Here you can enjoy a walk in the Almannagja canyon and explore the old parliament site. From here, your journey takes you through the village Laugarvatn to the Geysir geothermal area, where you will see the very active geyser Strokkur erupting spectacularly every five minutes or so. From Geysir it is only a 10-minute drive or so to the impressive waterfall, Gullfoss. A drive towards the south coast will take you to your accommodation. During the summer months, you might be able to attend a classical concert at Skalholt cathedral. Your accommodation for the night is in the vicinity of Fludir village or Thjorsardalur valley.

Day 3: Landmannalaugar

You can choose between the route across Domadalur valley or past the Hrauneyjar highland center to Landmannalaugar. There you can opt for one of several hiking options, and you have the opportunity to take a bath in a warm natural pool. If you are still up for some highland driving, you can drive to the volcanic lake district of Veidivotn in the late afternoon.

Day 4: Sprengisandur - Laugar/Adaldalur Valley

Today you can experience a real highland road. You drive through the desolate and sparsely vegetated desert of Sprengisandur between the glaciers Hofsjokull and Vatnajokul. On the way you have to cross several rivers.Further information on driving in the highlands comes with the detailed route description. 

Rest in the highland cabin in Nyidalur valley before heading onwards to Bardardalur valley, where you should not miss the magnificent waterfall of Aldeyjarfoss. 
Your accommodation is located in the area around Laugar, Lake Myvatn or in the Adaldalur valley.

Day 5: Lake Myvatn area

Spend the day exploring the area around Lake Myvatn, where you can choose from a variety of sights and activities. You can take a walk through the Dimmuborgir lava field, see the pseudo craters of Skutustadir and scale the crater Hverfjall.

The Nature Baths are perfect for some relaxation, and the privately-owned and slightly quaint bird museum on the lake side can also be recommended. In addition, you can drive to Husavík and hop on a 3-hour whale watching tour departing several times a day from the harbour.

Day 6: Egilsstadir

You will need an early start is as it will be a long day. Drive eastward along the ring road. Just before you cross the glacial river Jokulsa a Fjollum, you might want to take a left turn for a detour to see Dettifoss waterfall. 

Returning to the ring road, you cross the river and head for the interior. Pass Mt. Herdubreid to the volcano Askja and Víti crater. Afterwards you reach the ring road in Jokuldalur and drive onwards to your accommodation near Egilsstadir.

Day 7: Kjolur highland route

Driving over the mountain pass Oxi to Berufjordur fjord, you come into the fjord landscapes of East Iceland, with its characteristic sheer precipices and narrow coastline. 

Again on the ring road you follow the coast to the village of Hofn and in the afternoon you reach Jokularlon glacial lagoon, where you might be tempted to take a boat tour on the lagoon amidst the drifting icebergs. You are highly likely to catch a glimpse of seals when walking along the river or along the shore of the lagoon.

Day 8: Ingolfshofdi - Kirkjubaejarklaustur

The interesting tour to the bird cliffs of Ingolfshofdi runs daily (except Sundays) from Fagurholsmyri. You can see Puffins and the Great Skua on this tour, which does require some hiking skills.

The rest of the day can be spent in Skaftafell in the Vatnajokulsthjodgardur national park, where you can choose from several hiking routes, e.g. to the Svartifoss waterfall, sightseeing point Sjonarnipa or further to the mountains of Kristinartindar. Afterwards you continue your drive to the next village, Kirkjubaejarklaustur.

Day 9: Lakagigar and Laki  exploration

Take an excursion to the 25 km long row of craters at Lakagigar, also called Laki for short. The devastating volcanic eruption that took place here in 1783 left an area of 565 km2 covered in lava fields. 
On the way back from Laki to your accommodation, you might want to stop for a break in the beautiful Fjadrargljufur canyon.

Day 10: Vik - Reykjavik

Follow the south coast through the village of Vik to Myrdalur valley. You might want to take detours to the coast by Reynisfjara, to the bird cliffs of Dyrholaey or the glacier Solheimajokull. In Skogar you can visit the folk- and transport museum and see the picturesque waterfall Skógafoss. 
Further along the ring road, Seljalandsfoss waterfall is also worth the small detour. Drive through the town of Selfoss and the high plateau of Hellisheidi to Reykjavík.

Day 11: Depart Iceland

After breakfast time on your own. If you leave in the late afternoon or the evening you will have time to explore Reykjavík and stop by at the Blue Lagoon (must be pre booked, if interested please inquire) on your way to the airport.

If your flight leaves in the early morning you‘ll have to leave Reykjavík early for the airport, where you return your rental car before departure.
